The Hollywood Years

“Dropping off my kid at school in Los Angeles, I once saw another dad spot me and walk backwards to avoid me because my latest film had a bad opening weekend at the box office. He literally walked backwards. That is Hollywood.”

Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere were on totally different continents during my rehearsals for the late-night tango dance in the film, SHALL WE DANCE. We sent one choreographer to Richard, one to Jennifer, to teach them the two separate halves of the same dance. When the moment came to finally bring them together one day before the scene was filmed, it was electric.

I turned a corner and there was Warren Beatty. Diane Keaton’s wig was drying naturally in the sunshine. Warren got the joke, so did Diane. I think this photo expresses the futility of that period of my life. Divorce, cancer and TOWN AND COUNTRY, a film that shot for 132 days instead of 60 – they all happened in the same year. Warren is an extraordinary actor. Charismatic. A star.

The voice-over we wrote in the screenplay was: “Once upon a time, there was a young psychiatrist called Hector, who had a very satisfactory life. His world was tidy. Uncomplicated. And he liked it that way.” The still photograph of the scene should be telling the story before anyone has started acting. Creating the right atmosphere on a set is vital.
